International Conference on Media and Transformation in Germany and Indonesia

Media and Transformation in Germany and Indonesia: Dynamics and Regressions in Global Perspective Collaboration between Universitas Padjadjaran and University of Erfurt, Germany Jatinangor, 1 – 3 November 2017 As part of the Higher Education Dialogue with the Muslim World program sponsored by DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), The Faculty of Communication Sciences, Padjadjaran University and the Department of Media and Communication Science, University of Erfurt, Germany will hold an international conference with the theme Media and Transformation in Germany and Indonesia: Dynamics and Regressions in Global Perspective.

This program is part of the collaboration between the two institutions which began in 2015. In 2015 and 2016, the two educational institutions sent delegations of students and lecturers to carry out research and visits to respective universities in Indonesia and Germany. The activity raised the theme Media Systems and Communication Cultures in Comparative Perspective with four focus themes: Media and Political Transformation, Media Representation and Racism, Internet and Counter-Public Sphere, and Popular Culture and Democracy. Entering the third year, the two universities agreed to hold a conference at the Fikom Campus, Unpad, Jatinangor which remains focused on the four themes above.

Opened directly by Unpad Rector Prof. Dr. med. Tri Hanggono Achmad and the Dean of Faculty of Communication Sciences, Dr. Dadang R. Hidayat, S.Sos., SH., M.Sc., this conference presented Dr. Ir. Pramono Anung, M.M. which will provide special opening remarks. This conference aims to increase understanding between the two countries through cultural dialogue by examining the types and patterns of public communication from a shared perspective. In this conference, a Memorandum of Understanding will be signed between the two universities which will bind within the next 5 years for joint research and teaching activities.

Speakers from Germany who will attend are Prof. Dr. Kai Hafez and Dr. Anne Grüne from the University of Erfurt, while Sabrina Schmidt, M.A. (Uni-Erfurt) will give his presentation from Germany via video aid; Prof. Dr. Martin Löffelholz and Mira Rochyadi-Reetz, M.T., M.A. from Ilmenau University of Technology; Prof. Dr. Oliver Hahn from the University of Passau; Prof. Dr. Margreth Lünenborg from the Free University of Berlin; and Prof. Dr. Jeffrey Wimmer of the University of Augsburg.

One speaker from Egypt who will attend is Prof. Dr. Randa Aboubakr from Cairo University. The speaker from Indonesia is Dr. Ade Armando, M.Sc. (UI), Ratna Noviani, Ph.D. (UGM), Dr. Irwansyah, M.A. (UI), Prof. Dr. Yasraf Amir Piliang, M.A. (ITB), and Subekti W. Priyadharma, M.A. (Unpad). The moderators of this event from the Indonesian side were Nunik M. Hartoyo, M.Comn & MediaSt. (Unpad) and Centurion Priyatna, Ph.D. (Unpad).

The conference will also be attended by lecturers from universities in Indonesia who also participate in the round table discussion. In addition to the conference involving experts in the field of media and communication from Indonesia, Germany and Egypt, there is one session for 20 academics. young Indonesians who are currently pursuing doctoral studies (S3) to present their dissertation project and get responses from experts.
